The Manca Kumar & Joachim Bess Lied Duo, formed at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, is rooted in a shared sensitivity for text and musical dialogue, with a strong focus on dramaturgy and the psychological dimension of performance. Their artistic journey has been shaped by mentors such as Ilmo Ranta, Keval Shah, Tuija Hakkila, and Hanna-Leena Haapamäki, as well as their participation in the International Sibelius Singing Competition in 2025.
Since then, they were selected as one of nine duos for the MIND project, where they continue to develop their artistic approach through masterclasses and workshops with renowned musicians including Emmanuel Olivier, Eric Schneider, Daniela Tchakarova, Johannes Heldin, and Nejc Lavrenčič. They view an art song recital as an uninterrupted, immersive experience—a space where musical, emotional, and poetic layers intertwine and gradually transform over time. Their work places particular emphasis on continuity, internal connectedness, and the relationships between pieces, allowing the true meaning to unfold across the entire arc of the program.
Project: A Sense of Quiet Danger
What happens when night falls and dreams overtake reality?
This recital explores the universal themes of night and dreams through German Lied and French mélodie, designed as a comprehensive psychological and emotional journey. The program unfolds as an inner narrative, where each musical section highlights different states and affects, guiding the listener through a deep, almost immersive experience.
The repertoire draws from a broad spectrum of emotions and imagery associated with the night and dreamscape: Desire, imagination, and excitement; Fear, contemplation, and solitude; Elements of Orientalism woven throughout the selection; Recurring motifs—such as the moon, reflections, fog, and water—shape the atmosphere and reinforce the unity of the program. Time becomes fluid: some compositions feel suspended, while others remain anchored in the past or present. At the heart of this journey, illusion, fantasy, and denial confront awareness, inviting the listener to follow an internal emotional and mental path that remains open to personal interpretation.
The recital is structured into four psychological sections representing distinct states:
Love and fantasy, Disillusionment, Immersion into dreams, An open, unresolved ending, The sequence of songs creates a seamless, organic flow in which inner contradictions—desire and disappointment, fantasy and reality—mirror and evolve alongside one another.
Set within the aesthetic framework of the early 20th century, the program highlights French mélodie at its core, while also featuring art songs in Slovenian, Russian, English, Polish, German, and Finnish. Beyond well-known composers, it shines a light on lesser-known voices and incorporates several female composers.
Rather than telling a single narrative, the program offers multiple layers of interpretation: it can be understood as a story of lost love, the absence of a loved one, or an entirely internal, imaginary world. This openness, combined with a strong sense of continuity, forms a deeply personal and immersive experience.
